Jin
"The Rest Is History"
Interview by Luke Caldwell
Jin's new album, "The Rest Is History",
drops October 19th, 2004.
By now, anyone who knows Hip Hop is going to know the name Jin, the cocky and creative lyricist who displayed his rhyming skills on BET in the weekly freestyle battles. After blazing through the competition, and brutally destroying seven MC's, he earned himself a spot in the 106th and Park Hall of Fame, he landed a record deal with the Ruff Ryders, and is about to release his debut album The Rest is History on October 19th. Luke Caldwell had the chance to get an exclusive interview with Jin himself. Here's what he had to say....
Luke: How's everything? What have you been up to lately?
Jin: Things are hectic!! Which is good really cause if things were calm it would mean that things aint' poppin'. Its definitely poppin' though. I just got back from the Mixshow Power Summit in Puerto Rico, 50 G's richer from the Fight Klub MC Battle. In the words of 'Kiss, "The champ is here!"
Luke: You are originally from Miami, Florida, but you moved to New York to pursue a career in Hip Hop, how long were you in New York before things started to pick up for you and your career?
Jin: I moved to New York after 9/11 mainly for family reasons. Soon as I made the move though, I got into the mix of things ASAP as far as trying to get in the game. Slowly but surely things were starting to look pretty promising.
Luke: How long have you been rhyming?
Jin: I'm 22 and I've been rhyming seriously since I was 14 or so...so about 8 yrs now? Give or take a few days!
Luke: Now, I'm sure after your success with 106th and Park freestyle Fridays, there had to be a ton of labels after you. Why Ruff Ryders?
Jin: Ruff Ryders is more than just a label, it's a lifestyle. Bottomline is, no one can ever take away what the R has contributed to the whole Hip Hop movement. They've definitely made their stamp in the game and I'm here to add my little chapter to the books.
Luke: The Album The Rest is History is out in stores October 19th. Tell us a little about the album. Who you got spittin' on it? What producers you got on the beats?
Jin: As far as guest appearances go I got Twista, Styles P and two up and coming R'n'B artists, Lyfe Jennings and Aja. Production includes Kanye West, Bink, Wyclef, JustBlaze, Neo, Elite and several new producers. Definitely a lot of heat on the album.
Luke: You and Kanye West did a hot track on the album called "I Gotta Love," tell us about that, what was it like working with Kanye?
Jin: Yea, that track was all fun. It's a real catchy joint. Basically, just sometimes the person that some of us might feel the one is for us, is not really ideal for us. Kanye is a great producer so working with him was a dope experience.
Luke: How does it feel to achieve your dreams? I mean this is what you have wanted to do since you were little, and now your about to release your album, your doin' it real big. How does this feel?
Jin: It's such a blessing and I cherish every second of it. I look back on all the days and nights that I devoted myself to making this all happen. There were a lot of joys and heartaches but it's definitely all worth it.
Luke: Are you the kind of rapper who records 3 tracks a day? Or do you try and take your time?
Jin: Being productive is always a plus if you're an artist but I would never sacrifice quality for quantity.
Luke: Are there any artists out there who you would like to collaborate with?
Jin: It would be dope to work with Common, Talib or Game, all artists that I've met and showed a lot of love. I'm definitely looking forward to do a joint with 'Kiss for the next album.
Luke: Now I gotta ask you, who you got in your CD player right now?
Jin: Right now I'm knocking a lot of old school R'n'B. If not, then it's probably some mid 90's Hip Hop. My era!
Luke: You made your acting debut in "2 Fast 2 Furious." Are you looking at doing any more movies soon?
Jin: I'm working on getting this part in a real ill project that's due out next year. Keep your eyes open!
Luke: So what's next for Jin after the album drops? Can we expect to see you on tour?
Jin: Most definitely. From when the album drops to the end of the year, I will be on the road non stop.
Luke: I appreciate you taking the time to do this. You got any last words for your fans here in Seattle, WA?
Jin: Sea-town I got wild love for y'all!! Shouts out to all the folks that have showed me support since day one. The Rest Is History. Go pick that up October 19th!!! Thanks
