I am going to tell holla front something. RR and Virgin dropped the ball on this one. There is no promo what so ever on the telle. Album coming out in two weeks and learn Chinese is totally out of rotation. I heard a video was shot for senortia months back. Well if it was shot. Why wasn’t it shown at the 1000th 106 and park show? Jin is like the reason 106 got better ratings.

I'd have to agree that The Definition of History was more solid than this.

But then again, maybe that's because by being on this site, I've already heard like half the album, so it's sorta anti-climatic in a sense.

Not to mention that he re-uses some of his freestyle lines in a couple of the tracks...

Overall, it's not bad, but it's not great either.

It's a good effort for a first album though.

The orginal "Thank You," is WAY better than the album version. Too bad they couldn't get the sample cleared.

The track with Twista should have been the first single, in my opinion.

its a solid debut and i think its really just been a long time coming. decent cd that you can listen to. Its not a classic or anything but i mean i really didnt expect jin to be droppin a Illmatic type cd. He impressed me though. Way i look at it he can only improve.

For the record i just want to say that when october 19th rolls around i am still going to cop Jin's debut album because he been on the grind since day 1 working hard promoting, appearing on mixtapes, touring across the country, reppin all us asians to the fullest..However i'll have to be honest and say that i am actually dissapointment with the album not feelin' most of the songs and i am not a hater i been a fan of his since he won the freestyle friday on 106 and park.. for freestyles no one can touch him he straight fire but for songs he aint there just yet.. maybe on the next album and in the future he'll do better...it's all good thought not all artists blow up at first. I'll explain the reason why i did'nt think the album was good again this is just my opinion and what i think..everyone has their opinion and different taste in beats.

1.) Intro - was crap 0/5
2.)Here Now - no comment 0/5
3.) Get Your Hands Off - why does it say feat. swizz beats on it.. didnt neo da matrix produce this? overall the beat is sick i love it.. good vocals 5/5

4.) Club Song - vocals and beat horrible.. for a Just Blaze joint..could of been better..i don't see why Just Blaze did'nt pick a better beat..he gets an extra point just because Just Blaze shouts his name and it sounds good 2/5

5.) The Come Thru - an ok joint was so hyped up over it months ago when heard about that colabo but Twista does not spit as hard as he normally would like other joints such as Slow Jams, Overnight Celebrity, So Sexy 1 & 2, Freak-A-Leak Remix, Got It Twisted Remix... his vocals could of been alot better..i am not sure who did the beat but instrumental i was'nt feeling but after a few more listens i might like the song better.. i tend to do that alot..like when On Fire by Lloyd Banks came out i did'nt like but liked it a month later... a video should be made for this track. 3.5/5

6.) So Afraid - vocals matches the beat nicely..for some odd reason i like this one in my mind i think the beat is wack but i like it... 4/5
kwame produced an ok joint on this one..I think this is a 2nd single so is there goin be a video?..WHY DID'NT THEY INCLUDE THE REMIX ON THE ALBUM AS A BONUS TRACK AT LEAST. Styles P. did a good job on the remix.

Overall final rating = 43/85 = 51% gets a passing grade in my grade book by 2%

my favorite songs on the album have to be "Senorita", Get Your Hands Off", I Gotta Love" & "Thank You" the joints that were not my favorite but ok in my book are
"Love Story", "So Afraid" & "The Come Thru"


Virgin Records did not a good job on promoting Jin.. they did'nt do shit..no ads in hiphop magazines..other artists who's cd don't even come out for anothr 2-3 months have ads in magazines already...no videos for other songs such as I Gotta Love, Get Your Hands Off..did get those songs out there to make a buzz on radio, tv etc.
For such a stacked roster The family did'nt get others to colabo with Jin on the album.. people that should of lent their helping hand..people like Jadakiss, Jae-Hood, Sheek Louch, Cassidy, Mashonda, Drag-On, DMX...althought Eve is gone he could of did a joint with her when she was part of the team.. and what ever happend to the Missy Elliot produced beat and the Redman colabo...heck he should of asked Ludacris to lay a helping hand they worked together on 2 Fast 2 Furious. Again i am not a hater i am a big Jin fan and still am even thought i did'nt like the album much and first day it come out i am still going to buy it.. GOOD LUCK JIN with the sales but i don't know if it will go gold if it does props to u i wish the best...maybe on next album.. the beats will better and the colabos will go good.

Songs like Cmon(4/5)(the aol live version was a bit better cuz ther was no studio edits on the sound n shit but still a great track), got a love(4/5), hands off(4/5), here now(4/5) great lyric delivery but hook cuda been better, so afraid(4.5/5)(should of had styles p on it, would be better) i loved the solo track too, gets better everytime u listen to it. Karaoke Night(3.5/5) Hook n lyrics cuda been better.. senorita(4/5)could work a better hook or lyrics...same cry(4/5) was pretty good but its different, pretty weird hearing sum pop singer collabo with jin the first time, jin was too laid back when rhymin tho, Come thru(3.5/5)was also pretty good but lyrically could be better and jins delivery shoulda been better..learn chinese(3.5/5 wasn't as bad as critics make it out to be its just real different from how the mainstream listeners look at it). Wow i haven't been on this board for a long time and i can't seem to remember my old username unless they reset everybody's name but anyways, i just now listened to "the rest is history" and i must say i am surprised. i thought this album was going to mediocre at best but man....was i wrong or what. after this i am really giving jin props. i always gave him respect as a battle rapper but he has now proven to me that he can write good music. this album is really stayin true to the essence of hip hop. he has all the elements in this album. THe songs i'm feeling the must is prolly cold outside, , the come thru, love story and same cry. Most of the album is pretty good. i would say maybe 1 or 2 songs i wasn't feeling. But this album is MOS DEFinitely a classic in my opinion. I remember last year i was one of the peeps that was like man "jin is wack!" he has gain my respect. i am definitely pickin up the album october 19th.

5. The Come Thru ft. Twista- Solid Song. Beat was mad plain but I liked it..mostly because of Twista tho. 4/5

6. So Afraid- I really liked this song actually. He flowed well to the beat, hook is mad catchy. Very good lyrics. 4.5/5

7. I Got A Love ft. Kanye- Lyrics are bad. Catchy hook. I liked the beat even tho it was from Overnight Celebrity. Kanye pretty much saved this song with his catchy hook. 4/5

15. Karoake Night- Terrible beat. Reminds me of Oh No. Styles P made this song a little bit better...they shoulda kept him on the So Afraid song or feature in him in a song that didnt suck ass. 2/5

16. Same Cry- I really liked this song. Jin spits some deep shit about the things happening in China. I liked the beat..reminds me of one of those Korean rap songs. 4/5

17. Thank You- Basically a song of him shouting out everybody he knew. 3/5

Over all the album gotta 53.5/75 which is like a 7 out of 10 overall, which is solid for a debut album. He shoulda put I Dont Know, Gimmick, Peel Off, I loved You, or Check the Clock in it..woulda made it better in my opinion. Just my 2 cents. The album is worth buying. I know I'ma buy it.

It's not bad... it's pretty obvious that Jin recycled some lines but his album's still a lot better than a lot of the crap out there. I wouldn't classify a lot of the tracks as "mainstream" songs as the hooks don't have the same appeal as those of, say, 50 cent or eminem. Most of the tracks are well produced (I only had a problem with Club Song and Karaoke Night, which seemed a little off). And to the person who said Jin can't write, I listened to all the tracks and I personally feel that, overall, the lyrics are well thought out. At least Jin isn't talking about cash, money and cars every other second.

Anyhows I'll still buy the album. I do think its better than Cassidy or Kanye's albums.

This is a pretty good album! Can't expect every single track to be good. Most artist nowadays only have 2 or 3 good songs on their new release anyway. So, it doesn't make Jin's album any different. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I know I will get a copy when it comes out. In conclusion, give the man some credit at least for his hard work.

After reading the vague reviews in this thread I felt that I needed to give a more objective criticism. First let me state that I have been a strong Jin supporter ever since the first 106 battle. For an Asian-American, to see Jin destroy his opponents and exploit the stereotypes that were used against him was a dream. While many fans here on HF might find my review to simply be slanderous I am writing this in the light of responsibilities that I felt a potential voice in our community should have had.

As the first mainstream Asian American rap artist, I felt that Jin had an obligation to address issues that we as a subculture deal with. In American society we do not fit any slots that people normally are placed in. First, we are not black or white. Second, we are not only Hip-Hop fans, nor are we simply Asian Americans. We are a niche group, with our own identity: a true minority group in our own right. A group that needed a voice, to let people know that we exist and what we’re all about. Jin even said it himself, “to do for Asians what Big Pun did for Latinos.” While this may have been a colossal undertaking, it was one that I felt he was truly worthy of.

True Hip-Hop should be an expression of self, and I do not see a great deal of expression here. While Jin may have been under pressure by Virgin to produce a more pop album I do not know. However, considering the fact that we waited three years for this album to come out, I would have hoped he would have put a little more thought and effort into it. I have read many reviews here that said, “Oh, its ok for a debut album.” I find this to be simply unacceptable. For someone like Chingy, J-Kwon, or Cassidy, making a mediocre debut album might be alright. Jin’s situation is different. If Jin flops, we may never witness another Asian American major label signing ever again. Historically, some of the best Hip-Hop albums of all time were debut albums. (Illmatic, Ready to Die, 36 Chambers, Low End Theory, etc.)

The biggest issue that Jin struggled with from the beginning was whether or not he was a gimmick. He constantly says on his album that he is not a gimmick. In my opinion, the only true way for him to prove to the public that he is not would be to produce a timeless high quality album. This would involve actually saying something. For the most part, underlying messages, themes, are non-existent. I understand that we live in a world of watered-down hip hop but even 50 Cent was able to say something on his album. A large portion of the album is simply filler material. Here’s what I thought of each song:

Here Now: Mediocre, but seems to fit as an opening track. Jin does a decent job of setting a solid tone for the album.

Get Your Handz Off Me: One of the better tracks on the album; however Jin’s flow is strikingly similar to Camron on Get Em Girls. Neo did a good job with the beat.

Club Song: This song could easily have been omitted. It is extremely generic and uninspired. The lyrics are extremely generic, especially the hook. Just Blaze doesn’t help improve the situation either.

The Come Thru: The beat is decent. Jin’s lyrics are again generic. Twista easily outshines Jin.

So Afraid: One of the better tracks on the album. I do find it ironic that he accuses other rappers of sounding the same while he falls victim to the same problem.

I Got a Love: Working with Kanye was definitely a good idea, but since Kanye used the same sample already this record had no chance of success. No room in the airwaves for two songs with the same sample.

Learn Chinese: I think Wyclef did a decent job on this beat, but I don’t feel the same way about the rest of this song. Jin says that he wasn’t gonna rap about guns or drugs, but apparently, “the barrel of the gun gonna’ make us speak another language” Also, I simply could not stand the girl in the hook.

The Good Bad and Ugly: Again, I thought we weren’t going to be talking about guns and drugs? This is the first opportunity we have on the album to hear his storytelling skills, and guess what, it’s about a drug dealer. This type of story has been done a million times, and Jin really didn’t put much of a spin on it.

Seniorita: I really don’t see how this became the lead single for the album. Another watered down generic song.

Love Story: I felt that this was one of the strongest tracks on the album. Jin’s storytelling skills really shine here. I wish more of the album sounded like this. Not necessarily the soft tone, or the love theme, but the discussion of pertinent issues. Earlier in my review I said that Jin had to address Asian-American issues and interracial dating is one of those.
Anyone could write a love song, but here we can see the situation from an Asian-American perspective. I remember reading in an interview that Jin said that something he wanted to accomplish with his album was to give people a look at life from an AA perspective but this is really the only track where I think he got the job done.

Cmon: This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. I’m feeling the beat and if you take this song for what it is, it’s hot. But when you look at it under the scope of the whole album, Jin spends way too much time telling us that he had to go through a lot to get here today. I’ll discuss this more later.

Karaoke Night: Throwaway track. Waste of a guest appearance by Styles. Please help me understand the concept behind this song. How does Karaoke night turn into Open Mic night? We got some real garbage lyrics here: (Is that a pizza or lemon meringue??? Order now and get free installation??? ) I don’t’ know how Styles P gave this one the green light.

Same Cry: Decent track.

Thank You: Glad to see him do a track like this, although I’m bitter because he left me out.

Another thing that bothered me about the album is that Jin spent so much time taking about haters, and how he struggled to get to his fame, that he forgot about putting a lot of meaningful content into the album. Add the fact that a good chunk of it is filler material, and I find a lot lacking here.

Maybe I’m really asking for too much from Jin. Who knows how it must feel to be under the pressures in the position that he is in. A lot of what I have said gives you the impression that I hate the album. That’s not true, while I hoped it to be a lot more than it came out to be, it still is a good step in the right direction for us. Hopefully we will see a second album from Jin where we can see more of what I wished for in the first album.

Those who have followed Jin know that the man is incredibly gifted despite the lack of airtime he gets.Despite all the factors that are seemingly agianst him, Jin rises to the top in his first release, and sure to silence all his critics that believe him the be just a gimmick or a fade. After listening to the album, It is clear that Jin is going to be around for a long time to come. The talent he shows on this CD will no doubt eventually show, and cause radio stations around the country to play him and give him his due.

This is a very nice album. It is a break through. A wonderful break through for Chinese in US. Give it a chance.

Despite critics denouncing Jin's questionable "gimmicky" unofficial single, "Learn Chinese", this album still represents a solid performance from the Freestyle Friday champion from BET's 106 and Park. The album features guest appearances from some of the hottest hip-hop artists in the mainstream today, including Kanye West, Twista, and Styles P. Some highlights of the album include "Get Your Handz Off", which has Jin spitting a unique rhyming pattern over a fast-paced, upbeat set of Neo beats. Definitely not an artist lacking in wits and a sense of humor, Jin includes the satiric "Club Song" to poke fun at the similar qualities of so many mainstream songs today. Twista packs some heat with his appearance on "The Come Thru", which ironically includes a catchy, club-songish beat. One of two love-themed songs "I Got A Love" features the production and chorus singing of Kanye West, with Kanye utilizing his similar trademarked methods of sampling to create a catchy, drum-based background. Jin represents his hometown of Miami on his official single, "Senorita", which includes bouncy tunes that will inevitably hit many dance floors. "Love Song" is one of the truest tracks laid down by the emcee, where he rhymes about his first love and the issues of interracial relationships. Jin doesn't stop there, as he simply flips the script on "C'mon", which is arguably the best song on the album, lyrically and rhythmically. Trying to shy away from the usual subjects of cars, sex, and drugs that appear so regularly on hip-hop albums, Jin's most profound performance is manifested in "Same Cry", where he lectures about many struggles that Asians and Asian Americans have had to face throughout history. To top it all off, Jin remembers to count his blessings and dedicates a hot track called "Thank You", which features a thank you speech of epic length, showing that the artist isn't taking anything for granted. Overall, "The Rest Is History" features some solid performances from Jin, as he demonstrates versatility, potential for mass appeal, and lyrical insight through his songs.

I gotta say there's some bad songs (Kanye West track) but most of them are solid tracks...go cop it, "Same Cry" is a great song
